Art Fisher

What’s known for sure about Art Fisher is that he was in vaudeville. That’s about it.

And he gave the brothers their nicknames, according to various first person accounts including Groucho in The Marx Brothers Scrapbook, Harpo in Harpo Speaks (which places the naming in Rockford, IL, as does Hello, I Must be Going).

The earliest Marx-Fisher connection I could find (apart from them being on the same 1910 Joliet bill) is a story in The Dayton (OH) Daily News of  23 Jan 1927, placed as some publicity for The Cocoanuts I believe, that mentions the nicknaming as done by Fisher.

The earliest mention I could find of him linked to the nicknames that had a location included were newspaper stories in the fall of 1931 as part of the publicity for Monkey Business. Art is called a “famous vaudevillian” and “a leading monologist of the stage.” It says that they were playing as the Four Nightingales in Peoria. In 1932 publicity for Horse Feathers the site moved to Galesburg in some stories, but still mostly Peoria.

Legend says that it happened in Galesburg, IL in May of 1914. The Marxes played the Gaiety Theater in Galesburg May 14-16 that year. In the origin stories Art is described most often as a “monologist.”

On May 17, according to the Galesburg Register Mail, the Marx troupe played the Knox College baseball team to an exhibition game that drew a large crowd, in part thanks to “a throng of scantily dressed … chorus girls/cheerleaders” on the Marx side, according to the Galesburg paper.

Gaiety

But who was Art Fisher?

I decided to try and find out.

An early mention I found for Art was from December 1906, where he was filling in for someone on a bill (Variety, December 1906).

I think the writer confused Mr. Ellison stealing Leo Carrillo’s stories with Art Fisher. Since in Variety for January 1907 Leo Carrillo took out a warning ad.

Throughout the years 1907-1912 Art Fisher shows up regularly in vaudeville as a “cowboy mimic”, “mimetic comedian”, and “impersonator.” Though in the nickname stories he’s most often a “monologist.” Here’s a typical mention of the period from the Montpelier (VT) Morning Herald of 26 Jul 1910.

MontpielierVT Morning Journal1910

We know from Four of the Three Musketeers that Art Fisher played on the same bill as the Groucho, Harpo, and Gummo (as “Minnie Palmer and Her Seven Happy Youngsters” in the school act “Fun in a Seminary”) in Joliet, IL on Dec. 19-21, 1910.

I wanted to see if I could find out more.

I started by tracking mentions from national newspapers on newspaperarchive.com, newspapers.com, and the Library of Congress Chronicling America website at chroniclingamerica.loc.gov. Also Variety from lantern.mediahist.org, and Illinois newspapers from the Illinois Digital Newspaper Collection at idnc.library.illinois.edu.

Perhaps my greatest find was a photo of Art in his cowboy mimic gear.

Fisher_Art_photo-12 Jan 1908 Daily Arkansas GazetteLittle Rock, (AK)  Daily Arkansas Gazette of 12 Jan 1908.

Eventually I found 559 dates for Art. From August 1906 to September 1912.  And then three dates in September 1919.

Often in the Midwest but also in other far-flung locations. After September 1912 the trail runs totally dry, at least in all the above sources, which is odd since he was (I assume) playing somewhere in 1914 in order to give the nicknames.

So in the end I couldn’t ever find any genealogical evidence of Art. Not in the 1910 census. Not a 1917 draft registration.  So he remains a mystery. But at least I did my best to flesh out his professional career.

About that May 1914 Date

In my researching of Art there’s a very pronounced ending of his career in September 1912.  It’s the last monologist/imitator/cowboy mimic Art Fisher reference I could find in any of my sources (apart from those three odd 1919 dates).

As mentioned before, we know that Art Fisher and (some) Marx Brothers were on the same bill Dec. 19-21, 1910 when Harpo, Groucho, and Gummo were performing as “Minnie Palmer and Her Seven Happy Youngsters at the Grand Theater in Joliet. This date, at least, dovetails nicely with the height of Art Fisher’s career.

(The Joliet News,  20 Dec 1910)

The Monkey Business publicity mentioned above from fall 1931 is, as I’ve said, the earliest evidence I could find of a Marx-Fisher naming story. It mentions Peoria and, interestingly, it places the naming as during “The Four Nightingales” era. Which was 1908-1909. So not 1914. But not too far from that December 1910 Joliet date with Art Fisher. At that time they were being billed briefly as “Minnie Palmer and her Seven Happy Youngsters,” which was really the Six Mascots act, which was itself a form of The Four Nightingales. They were about to transition into the “Fun in Hi School” act.

In 1932 there was a round of Horse Feathers publicity stories that mostly mention Peoria- except a handful that mention Galesburg.

Harpo, in Harpo Speaks, says that the naming happened at an undated time in Rockford, IL (every story has it happening in Illinois) while they were playing “a couple local spots before making the great swing to the west coast and back through Canada.”

In May 1914 they played a couple local spots in Illinois and then moved south to Texas.

But in 1910 they played in Joliet in December with Art Fisher and then local spots through the spring, before heading to the west coast and Canada, as per Harpo. Specifically Spokane at the end of July, then Vancouver, and eventually California in September. So the places in Harpo’s version match. He may have been conflating two different trips, but that’s less likely if we assume May 1914 is logically impossible.

One stumbling block to my theory is that Chico wasn’t with the act until 1912. But then neither was Zeppo. And naming Chico after the chickens he chased wouldn’t be much of a stretch.

One offshoot of my theory is that, as cited in Four of the Three Musketeers, Gummo recalls Harpo’s harp originally joining him for the first time in Joliet in late December 1910. Which would mean that Harpo may have gotten his harp and his nickname during the same weekend in December 1910.

For what it’s worth, here is what is believed to be the earliest mention of a harp in a the Marx Bros. act.

It’s from Variety of 21 Jan 1911 while “Fun in Hi Skule” was playing the Clark Theater in Chicago.

The Clark Theater building is still standing in Chicago. On the far north side at 4533 North Clark St. And behind, in the alley, is the bricked up outline of what may be the first stage door Harpo’s harp ever went through.

And here are the 562 dates I could find for Art.
